LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama men's soccer opened its 2014 season with a 6-2 victory over Concordia College at Tiger Stadium on Thursday.

West Alabama (1-0) overcame adversity twice allowing two goals to Concordia (0-1) in the first half before securing the win with two goals by
Thibault Charmey in the final 10 minutes of the first half and two second half goals by
Alex Brown and
Vitor Gazza.

Concordia took a 1-0 lead in the 12
th minute off of a penalty kick by Diego Outeiral. The Hornet's lead lasted two minutes as UWA's
Brian Meadows responded with an unassisted goal off a rebound by goalie Freddy Mendoza.

The Tigers took their first lead of the night with a goal by
Emmanuel Mondestin in the 26
th minute, but Edwin Exume of Concordia would equalize 10 minutes later in the 36
th minute.

Charmey's first goal came on a 37 yard strike and proved the game winner. His two scores extends him as the program's leading scorer with 18 goals. Gazza ended with an assist along with his goal in the 74
th minute.

Lavares Stone (1-0) faced two shots on-goal to pick up his14th career win. Fredy Mendoza (0-1) faced 15 shots on-goal and made nine saves. Â Â Â

"We tried to play diagonally a bit too quickly at the start, but we settled in and started playing our game as the match wore on," said UWA head men's soccer coach
Matthew Thorne. "Overall we are very pleased with our performance to start the season off with a convincing victory. Now we have to quickly prepare for Montevallo on Sunday."

UWA men's soccer will have a quick turnaround, but remain at home to host 2013 Peach Belt Conference Champions, Montevallo at 1 p.m. on Sunday.?
