LIVINGSTON, Ala. - Senior
Traye Torrance posted two goals to lead West Alabama men's soccer to a 4-0 victory over defending Peach Belt Conference Champions Montevallo at Tiger Stadium on Sunday.
It was UWA's first shutout of the season as they improved to 2-0 overall, dropping Montevallo to 1-1.
"It was a very tight game, but our lads kept pushing and were able to take a few chances in the first half," said UWA head men's soccer coach
Matthew Thorne. "We were able to extend our chances to the second half, and I am able to say we deserved that win overall.
"They have some fantastic players and we had to make sure we were on our game, limiting their time on the ball. It was a squad performance and even though its very early in the season we made a statement today."
The Tigers posted 10 shots in the first half, with four on-goal. Torrance's first goal came with 11:05 left in the period when he found the back of the net after rebounding a strike from
Thibault Charmey that hit the left post. The goal proved Torrance's second game winning goal of his career.
Charmey extended the first half lead to 2-0, rebounding his own shot in the final three minutes. He now leads the Tigers with three goals in two matches.
Evan Beutler opened the second half with his first goal of the season in the 59th minute on an assist by
Vitor Gazza.
Torrance's second goal came off of a corner kick by
Brian Meadows in the 61st minute to extend the lead to four.
UWA totaled seven shots on-goal, while the defense limited Montevallo three.
Lavares Stone (2-0) made three saves to record his sixth career shutout; first of the season. Yannic Horn (1-1) allowed all four goals despite making three saves to get his first loss of the year. Â
West Alabama returns to the pitch on Friday to host Florida Tech at 7 p.m. in Tiger Stadium.
"Florida Tech will be another quality opponent from the Sunshine State Conference," said Thorne. "It will be a battle to the final second. We just have to go in and continue to work hard in training this week."
