EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Ohio Dominican edged out West Alabama volleyball 3-2 (25-14, 24-26, 25-19, 20-25, 13-15) in the fifth set in the opening day of the 2014 Dunn Hospitality Invitational hosted by Southern Indiana on Friday. The Tigers fell to McKendree 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-22) in the first match.
With two matches remaining in the invitational, West Alabama drops to 0-2 overall. McKendree took a 1-0 start to its season, while Ohio Dominican fell to Missouri – St. Louis 3-1 in its first match to move to 1-1.
Tory Thompson led Ohio Dominican with 21 points striking down 19 kills while also leading on defense with 16 digs.
Yanesha Johnson led the Tiger attack with 13 kills and 17 points against the Panthers. Newcomer
Briana Sandifer totaled 11 kills on her way to .360 attack percentage and 12 points.
McKendree's Arela Williams led with 13 of her team's 39 kills. She added three service aces to her .385 attack percentage to finish three sets with 16 points.
The Tigers were limited to 19 kills after 20 attacking errors against the Bearcats.
Morgan Ray and
Jessica Voyles led with four kills each, while
Elizabeth Culhane added three off of a .500 attack percentage.
Callie Murphy ended the day with 51 total assists, while posting her career best of 34 assists against ODU.
Lindsey Ball led the Tigers on defense in both matches totaling 31 total digs; 22 against the Panthers.
The Tigers will conclude the invitational against Cedarville and Lincoln Memorial at 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. respectively in the Physical Activities Center on Saturday.Â
