Tiger Cross Country Men Win Martin Epps XC Classic

CLINTON, Miss. – West Alabama placed six runners in the top eight on the way to winning the Martin Epps XC Classic in Ray Stanfield's debut as Tiger head cross country coach Saturday at Choctaw Trails.
 
Freshman Victor Onyango from Kapsabet, Kenya, navigated the 8K course in 26:17.47 to win the entire meet which was hosted by Jackson State and contained several NCAA Division I programs.
 
"Victor was very impressive. He ran very relaxed, and to run that fast on that course in this heat was special," Stanfield said. "The kids ran very strong and we started the season just as we thought we could."
 
Rafael Duenes clocked in a5 27:21.64 to take third in the meet, followed by William Kazery (27:24.63) in fourth, Zach Mosley (27:29.41) in fifth, Kenny Slavik (27:42.94) in sixth and Cosmas Cheseret (28:15.17) in eighth.
 
West Alabama scored 19 points to win the meet, followed by Belhaven with 77. Jackson State (82), Spring Hill (107) and Alcorn State (117) rounded out the top five.
 
West Alabama is set to compete at the UAH/Earl Jacoby Memorial next Saturday in Huntsville. The meet gives the Tigers an opportunity to compete on the same course where the NCAA Division II South Regional will be held later this season.
