CARROLLTON, Ga. – Senior
Nicki Gears netted a goal in each half to lead West Alabama women's soccer to 4-0 win over Limestone College in the final day of the Conference Carolina/Gulf South Conference Challenge hosted by West Georgia on Sunday.
West Alabama improves to 1-1 overall, while Limestone falls to 0-1-1.
"Today we just added the end product to a great performance," said UWA head women's soccer coach
Graeme Orr. "Both games this weekend we played smashing soccer and learned a lot about our strengths against good opponents. This will really help prepare us for a tough start to the conference."
Gears' game winning goal came on a header off of a corner kick from
Rianna Gurvitz. Five minutes into the second half she struck again, this time on an assist from
Katy Morris to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Gear's extends her career goals to 39 as the program leader. Â
Nicola Gibson added her 12
th career score on a header on a pass from
Haylee Frank five minutes later. In the final 15 minutes, Morris netted her seventh career goal unassisted.
Four Tigers ended with multiple shots. Defender
Tori Brook extended the attack going 2-of-3 shots on-goal. UWA made 17 shots, while holding the Saints to seven; five on-goal.
Issy Foster (1-1) made four saves to combine with
Anna Eastis for the shutout. Eastis closed the final 13 minutes of the match in the goal. Mariette Martinez (0-1-1) faced nine shots on-goal, making five stops to take the loss.
The Tigers now travel to Morrow, Ga. to take on Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday at 6 p.m.
