Argos Take Advantage of UWA Turnovers to Win, 71-64

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Florida scored 31 points off 22 West Alabama turnovers to notch a 71-64 Gulf South College women's basketball victory over the Tigers Saturday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

The victory improved the league-leading Argonauts to 11-2 overall and 8-1 in GSC play. West Alabama dropped to 6-7 and 3-6 in the first of a five-game home stand.

"When you get outrebounded, have more turnovers and give up that many points off turnovers, it makes it tough to win," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "There is a reason why West Florida is 8-1 in the league, though. They are a really good basketball team who knows how to finish."

West Alabama jumped out to a 6-0 lead to open the game, but West Florida scored the next 16 and never trailed again. The Argos led 36-23 at the half and by as many as 15 points before the break.

West Alabama trimmed the lead to five points in the second half, but couldn't get over the hump due to costly turnovers.

"Great teams will expose your weakness and we got exposed a couple of times today," Cram said. "We got close two or three times in the second half and then did something stupid. We have to decide to play two halves."

Toni Brewer had 21 points and eight rebounds to lead West Florida. Katie Bobos chipped in 14 points and Brianna Williams 10 for UWF, who shot 51 percent (28-54) from the floor. The Argos outrebounded UWA 41-36.

Kelcia Bufkin and Jasmine Hampton were the only UWA players in double figures, with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Britney McCloud had six rebounds for the Tigers, but the second-leading scorer in the GSC was held to single digits for the second straight game, finishing with six points.

West Alabama continues its five-game home stand by hosting Valdosta State Monday. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. Free hot dogs will be available for Tiger fans that arrive early.
