Johnson’s Buzzer Beater Lifts UWA Women Over Valdosta

LIVINGSTON, Ala.Malaka Johnson's buzzer-beating layup in the first overtime lifted West Alabama to a 69-67 women's Gulf South Conference basketball victory over Valdosta State Monday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

The win improved UWA, who came from 18 points down to win, to 7-7 overall and 4-6 in the GSC. Valdosta State lost its fifth straight game and dropped 8-8 and 4-6.

"This is the type of game that can change a season," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "It was so good to see what we work on practice come to fruition, especially on that last play. We do that four-second drill every day in practice."

On the game-winning sequence Britney McCloud ran the length of the floor in 4.2 seconds before dishing to Johnson for the game winner.

Johnson wasn't the only Tiger to nail a big shot. Latisha McCullum nailed a jump shot with 6 seconds left in overtime to tie the game at 61-61 and her basket with 5:30 left gave UWA its first lead of the game.

"Our bench was very good tonight and I am so proud of all our kids," Cram said. "We challenged Britney McCloud at the half and she climbed out of her rut tonight, particularly in the second half."

The second-leading scorer in the conference, McCloud had been held to single digits in the last two games and managed just one bucket in the first half against the Lady Blazers. She nailed 10-of-15 from the floor to finish with a game-high 23 points.

McCullum chipped in 14 points and collected nine rebounds for UWA, who outscored VSU 47-31 in the final 25 minutes.

Maylisa Johnson scored 16 points to pace Valdosta. April Thomas chipped in 15 and Maggie Davis 13. Imari Simpson collected nine rebounds for the Lady Blazers.

West Alabama continues its five-game home stand by hosting West Georgia Saturday 2 p.m. Valdosta State travels to West Florida.
