FLORENCE, Ala. –
Latisha McCullum buried a 15-foot jumper with 53 seconds left to play and West Alabama made it stand the rest of the way to steal a 70-69 Gulf South Conference women's basketball road win over North Alabama Thursday at Flowers Hall.
Â
West Alabama improved to 9-9 overall and 6-8 in the GSC with the victory. UNA dropped to 10-8 and 7-7.
Â
In a game where the lead changed hands 14 times, it was McCullum's jumper that changed it last. Neither team could manage a basket for the remainder of the game. The biggest lead of the game for either team was six points.
Â
"We did a lot of good things tonight, but I saw something tonight for the first time this season when we called timeout with four seconds left," UWA coach
Rusty Cram said. "In that timeout huddle there was a sense of confidence in our players' faces that we were going to finish and win this basketball game."
Â
After McCullum's game-winner each team turned the ball over on the held possession rule, with the last one coming at 4.2 seconds left and the possession arrow pointing toward West Alabama. To have any chance, UNA had to foul on the inbounds pass, but couldn't make it happen.
Â
"We knew they had to foul and they couldn't catch us," Cram said. "I am so proud of our kids. This win could go a long way for us with five straight home games coming up."
Â
Britney McCloud scored 20 points for UWA to lead all scorers.
Kelcia Bufkin chipped in 15 points and
Malaka Johnson 10.
Sheila Washington and
Jasmine Hampton grabbed eight rebounds each for the Tigers.
Â
Jennifer Towne scored 17 points to pace North Alabama. Janae Lyde added 14 and Delisa Madry 10. Mekena Randle collected a game-high 13 rebounds for the Lions.
Â
West Alabama begins a five-game homestand Saturday when Alabama-Huntsville visits Pruitt Hall Gym. Tipoff is 2 p.m.
