Bufkin Scores 20 as UWA Defeats UAH 66-61

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Kelcia Bufkin scored 20 points and the West Alabama reserves put up 30 more as the Tigers defeated Alabama-Huntsville, 66-61, in women's Gulf South Conference basketball Saturday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

The win improves UWA to 10-9 overall and doubles the Tigers win total from last season. Coach Rusty Cram's first Tiger team is 7-8 in GSC play one game into a current five-game homestand. UAH is 10-11 and 7-8.

"Our confidence is starting to show more and more every game," Cram said. "We are continuing to get better and better because we are doing the things to make that happen.

"They outscored us 24-2 at their place off the bench, so we challenged our kids on that," Cram said. "I believe they answered the bell."

The Tigers forced 17 Lady Charger turnovers and capitalized on them for 19 points while shooting 49 percent from the field and making 12-of-15 free throws (80 percent). West Alabama led for almost three-quarters of the game.

The West Alabama defense smothered Alabama-Huntsville in the second half, limiting the Lady Chargers to just 8-of-23 from the floor while putting the visitors away.

Bufkin converted 8-of-14 field goal attempts on the way to her scoring at least 20 points for the second time this season. Latisha McCullum and Jada Williams came off the UWA bench to score 16 and 10 points, respectively. Jasmine Hampton grabbed six rebounds.

Britney McCloud, UWA's leading scorer and the second-leading scorer in the GSC, played sick and also injured an ankle in the game, limiting her to just two points.

"McCloud been struggling all week with the flu and then turned her ankle, but Bufkin, Jada and McCullum stepped up and that's what a team does," Cram said. "Who would have thought that Britney would score just two points and we would win?"

Dina Saunders had 24 UAH points to lead all scorers. Hallie Jarnigan chipped in 13 points and Josi Saunders 12 for the Lady Chargers.

West Alabama continues its homestand by hosting Christian Brothers Thursday at 5:30 p.m. UAH travels to Lee on Thursday.
