Columbus State Completes Sweep of UWA

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Columbus State pitchers limited West Alabama to just one run over two games on the way to sweeping a college baseball doubleheader, 5-1 and 4-0, from West Alabama Saturday at Ragsdale Field.

Columbus State improved to 3-0 with the sweep. West Alabama is 0-3 after the first weekend of play in 2015.

Sean Muller (1-0) picked up the win for CSU in the opener in relief of starter Caden Ferguson. Starter Bryan Headley (1-0) went six shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out five to pick up the win in the second game.

Josh Jones (0-1) took the opening loss in relief for West Alabama. Starter Gandy Stubblefield (0-1) was the loser in the nightcap. Game one starter Fernando Gonzalez left with no decision after six innings in the opener, allowing one run on six hits and striking out six. Stubblefield allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits.

Adam Chamblee hit a solo home run in the second inning of game one for West Alabama. It was the only time a UWA player would cross the plate the rest of the day. The Tigers managed just nine hits over the two games.

Columbus State put the first game away by scoring four runs in the seventh inning. Brendan Collins, Kevin Manos and Carson Bowers all doubled off Jones in the frame.

Collins led off the second game with a triple to deep centerfield and scored on Chris Daniel's single, giving Headley all the support he would need. The Cougars took advantage of a pair of UWA errors to score three more times in the fifth inning.

Collins had three this and reached base seven times for the Cougars in the two games. Christian Miller also had three hits for Columbus State.

West Alabama is host to Palm Beach Atlantic in a three game series at Tartt Field beginning Friday at 1 p.m. Columbus State travels to Lynn University for three games beginning Saturday.
