Tigers Pick Up First Win Behind Cruz

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Jorge Cruz scattered two hits over seven scoreless innings to lead West Alabama to a 9-3 college baseball victory over Palm Beach Atlantic Friday at Tartt Field.

The Tigers improved to 1-3 and the Sailfish dropped to 0-2. The same two teams play again Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.

"Jorge commanded both sides of the plate and had command on all three of his pitches," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "When he does that he can be tough to beat."

Cruz (1-1) struck out five and did not walk a batter on the way to his first win as a Tiger. Palm Beach Atlantic starter Tyler Scheuer (0-1) took the loss after allowing eight runs on nine hits in three innings.

West Alabama picked up two runs in the first inning, but did the majority of its damage in a six-run third inning. The Tigers strung together six consecutive hits in the frame, including a two-run home run by Jake Bush, his first of the season. A triple by Tanner Rainey and a sacrifice fly from Luigi Mendez plated the final Tiger run in the eighth inning.

"Parker Madden did a great job jump starting us early with hits to start the first and third innings and Luigi Mendez did a great job at the bottom of the order," Rundles said. "Jack Cockrum had some good at bats and we really played well defensively."

Madden, Mendez and Mitch Holgate had two hits each to pace an 11-hit UWA attack. Holgate, Bush and Mendez each drove in two runs.

Palm Beach Atlantic did all if its damage in the ninth inning, touching up Tiger reliever Neil Lambert for three runs on five hits, including a double from Andres Vazquez.

Chris Farrell was the only Sailfish hitter with two hits, including a double in the first inning. He singled and scored a run in the ninth.
