Lee Escapes UWA Ambush in GSC Women’s Basketball

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Lee University made 18 free throws in the second half, holding on to defeat West Alabama, 58-55, in Gulf South Conference women's basketball action Monday at Walker Arena.

Lee improved to 8-3 overall, 5-3 in GSC play, in a game that featured seven lead changes and seven ties. West Alabama dropped to 6-6 and 3-5 in its 10th road game of the season.

Lee led by as many as 10 points in the first half before the Tigers rallied back to take a 22-21 advantage into the half. West Alabama led 48-41 with 7:59 left in the game, but the Flames tied the game at 50-50 with 4:18 to play and outscored UWA 17-7 the rest of the way.

"We are competing in this conference now and people are not taking us lightly anymore," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "It's about respect and these kids have it now.

"We had three goals coming into the game. First, we wanted to score at least 60. Secondly, we had to limit Lee's three-pointers, and lastly we had to keep them off the free throw line," Cram said. "We couldn't keep them off the free throw line in the second half."

Emileigh Swafford converted 14-of-17 free throws, including 3-of-4 down the stretch, to share the game scoring lead with teammate Erin Walsh. With 23 points apiece, Walsh and Swafford accounted for all but 12 of Lee's points. Lee made just 4-of-18 three-point attempts, with Walsh making three of those.

Kelcia Bufkin and Jada Williams scored 11 points each to lead UWA. Sheila Washington recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Britney McCloud, the second-leading scorer in the GSC, was limited to eight points on 3-of-14 shooting from the floor.

"They did a great job on Britney, taking her out of the game," Cram said, "but that's what the best teams do and that's one reason they are at the top of the conference."

West Alabama plays at home for just the fourth time this season when West Florida visits Pruitt Hall Gym Saturday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
