ROME, Ga. – Shorter University's Mark Hanion led the Hawks to a 3-2 victory over West Alabama with the game-winning goal in the 97
th minute of overtime in Gulf South Conference men's soccer action Sunday.
Shorter improves to 4-6-1 overall and 2-2 in the GSC, while issuing the Tigers its first conference loss of the year. UWA dips to 5-5-2 and 4-1-1. It was the fourth match to go into extra minutes for the Tigers, marking five overtime periods this season.
The Hawks took its first lead only one minute into regulation with a goal by Darwin Lorn. It took until four minutes into the second half before the Tigers responded with a goal on an
Alex Brown penalty shot.
UWA proceeded to take the lead with another goal by
Liam Ireland in the 55
th minute. Charlie Dennis then netted the equalizer with the 77
th minute to send the match into extra minutes.
Austin Trevers (4-6-1) picked up the win in the net for Shorter, completing seven saves.
Joshua Bramwell (4-2-1) took the loss with three saves.
West Alabama men's soccer returns home on Friday to host GSC opponent Spring Hill College. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
