Swindle Sets Rushing Record as Tigers Defeat Shorter, 52-27

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Javae Swindle set the West Alabama career rushing record and Harry Satterwhite passed for three touchdowns as the Tigers defeated Shorter, 52-27, in Gulf South Conference football action Saturday at Tiger Stadium.

The win improved West Alabama to 5-2 overall, 1-2 in GSC play, and snapped a two-game losing skid in GSC play. Shorter dropped to 2-4 and 1-2.

"This is exactly what we needed," UWA head coach Brett Gilliland said. "This football team decided last Sunday that we were sick of losing and that we would come together and put the work in. It showed up in the game."

Swindle finished with 69 yards on six carries, giving him 2,220 yards on 286 career rushes, a hefty 7.8 yards per carry. The previous record holder, Matt Willis (2011-12) rushed for 2,171 yards on 386 carries.

"I have to thank God first for allowing me to be in this situation," Swindle said after being hoisted to his teammates shoulders in a victorious UWA locker room. "I have been striving to do something special since I came here and I did it. It's a great feeling."

Swindle opened the scoring for West Alabama and set the Tiger career rushing on his first carry of the day, a 50-yard touchdown burst up the middle with 13:00 left in the first quarter. Jordan Ikner's extra point attempt was wide and UWA led 6-0.

"What Javae did is a huge deal and well deserved," Gilliland said. "Records like this are team records, but Javae has a special talent where he is able to get loose and go. He showed that on the record-breaking run."

Satterwhite, in his first start as UWA's quarterback, hooked up with Daryl Collins on a 59-yard scoring pass with 4:23 left in the opening period. Satterwhite and Collins also hooked up on the two-point conversion to give the Tigers a 14-0 lead.

Satterwhite and Collins connected again with 8:02 left in the second quarter on a 10-yard touchdown pass to put the Tigers up 21-7. The redshirt freshman from Mobile, Alabama picked up his third TD pass of the game, a 79-yard pass and run to Tyreek Hill that gave UWA 28-14 lead with 5:35 left in the first half.

"We were ready to play and I felt comfortable. We came out fast and then finished," Satterwhite said. "D.C. (Collins) runs some great routes and we just connected like we had all week. It was a privilege to be able to hand the ball off to Javae to get that record."

Satterwhite completed 11-of-19 passes for 219 yards. He also rushed for 17 yards and took every offensive snap at quarterback for the Tigers, marking the first time that had happened all season for UWA.

Collins and Hill both had four receptions to lead UWA. Hill's were for 90 yards and Collins' for 86. Ikner kicked a 22-yard field goal for the Tigers while also averaging 45.8 yards on five punts.

Shorter's triple option rang up a hefty 436 yards rushing on a West Alabama defense that was allowing just 64 yards per game coming into Saturday. The Hawks did not complete a pass in nine attempts.

B.J. McCoy ran for 210 yards on 22 carries and Aaron Bryant 93 more on 14 to pace the Shorter attack. Malcolm Quarterman had 76 yards on just six carries.

Shorter scored twice on long runs in the second quarter with Bryant breaking loose on a 71-yard touchdown run with 10:03 left in the half and McCoy on a 92-yarder three minutes later to cut the UWA lead to 21-14. McCoy would add a 30-yard TD run with 5:35 to play in the third quarter.

Rashaad Lee, who led Tiger rushers with 70 yards on 14 carries, scored the first of his two touchdowns on direct snaps by going 6 yards with 35 second left in the first half and then 5 yards at the 7:30 mark of the third period to give UWA.

Tyler Rogers capped West Alabama scoring on a 1-yard run with 7:05 left to play following a Mike Williams fumble recovery that set UWA up at the Shorter 22. Rogers carried for all 22 of those yards in two trips.

Devante James scored from 5 yards out with 55 seconds left for the game's final margin.

Quentin Harton recorded nine tackles, including a sack and one for loss, to lead the UWA defense. Felix Wood and Ezekiel Ufomadu both had six stops. Harton, Williams, Nicarius Peterson and Ashton Derico all recovered fumbles for UWA.

"Everybody focused on their keys and we made stops when we had to," Harton said. "We played with good eyes and it helps that Coach (Nathan) Burton had coached there and was familiar with their offense.

"I need to give the defensive line a special shout out because I hardly got touched today," Harton said. "This feels way better than the last two weeks and I was glad we got to give our fans what they wanted."

Jordan Shaw had eight tackles to lead Shorter. Luke Wilson followed with seven and 1.5 tackles for loss.

Both teams continue in GSC play next week, with West Alabama traveling to Delta State. Shorter is host to Valdosta State.
