Blazers Use Turnovers to Secure 55-28 GSC Football Win over UWA

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State converted four interceptions into points, including two pick sixes, on the way to a 55-28 Gulf South Conference football victory over West Alabama Saturday at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.

The victory improved Valdosta State to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in GSC play. West Alabama dropped to 6-3 and 2-3.

"We just got our butts kicked, plain and simple," UWA head coach Brett Gilliland said. "Valdosta State is a very good football team. Every time we started to get some momentum they made a big play and took it back."

The Blazer secondary got an early start with their thievery. West Alabama drove into the Valdosta State red zone on its opening drive before Raymond Palmer intercepted Harry Satterwhite into the end zone to end the threat.

The Blazers then went 80 yards on nine plays to take a 7-0 lead with 8:01 left into he first quarter. Cedric O'Neal capped the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run.

The Blazers turned another late first-quarter interception into a touchdown when Malcolm McClenton picked Satterwhite to set up VUS at the UWA 14. On the next play EJ Hilliard connected with Austin Scott and Valdosta State led 14-0 with 1:37 left in the opening period.

Returning the favor, West Alabama's first score was set up by a Charles Bester interception of Hilliard at midfield. Satterwhite and Daryl Collins connected two plays later from the 28 to make it 14-7 Blazers with 9:01 left in the half.

Collins finished with eight receptions for 113 yards to lead pass catchers from both teams. Satterfield had five receptions for 32 yards.

"I tried to put the team on my back and do what a playmaker is supposed to do," Collins said. "It didn't work out today."

The Blazers scored twice more in the second quarter, first on a 46-yard run by O'Neal and then on Kenny Moore's 20-yard pick six with 6:26 left in the second quarter. The pick was Valdosta State's third in the first half, with all three leading to Blazer touchdowns.

West Alabama cut the lead to 27-14 with 19 seconds left in the first half when Satterfield connected with Randy Satterfield on fourth-and-goal at the VSU 2-yard line.

After trading body blows for much of the third quarter, Hilliard connected with Greg Dent on a 40-yard scoring play with 1:43 left to make the score 34-14 Valdosta State.

CJ Savage returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards to the Blazer 5-yard line and Rashaad Lee took it in from there to cut the Blazer lead to 34-21.

Hilliard and O'Neal killed any Tiger buzz generated by Savage and Lee on a 74-yard catch and run on a screen pass on the first play of the fourth quarter, upping the Blazer lead to 41-21 with 14:45 left to play.

"On some of those big plays they bounced it out on us. We need to get back to fundamentals and wrapping up ball carriers," Tiger defensive lineman Jared Washington said. "Nothing is promised in this world and in football. We have to just keep moving forward."

A seven-play, 73-yard Tiger drive resulting in a 10-yard touchdown run by Lee pulled West Alabama back to within 13 points at 41-28, but Valdosta answered by going 62 yards on just four plays, capped by a 17-yard touchdown run by Scott.

Linebacker Kenny Murphy capped off Valdosta State scoring with the Blazers second interception return for a touchdown, this one for 73 yards with just 3:34 left in the game.

Valdosta State rolled up 467 yards of total offense, 198 rushing and 269 passing. UWA had 369, with 256 coming through the air.

Satterwhite was 24-for-40 for 256 yards with the two touchdowns and four interceptions. Lee led UWA rushers with 54 yards on 15 carries. Satterwhite had 44 on six.

O'Neal ran for 108 yards on 14 carries and caught four passes for 106 yards to lead the VSU attack. Scott had 65 yards on eight carries. Dent had 79 receiving yards on six catches. Hilliard was 13-of-18 for 216 yards and three scores.

Brandon Lilly led Tiger tacklers with six, three solo. Washington was in on two sacks and DeQuante Shockley had a sack and a tackle for loss.

Murphy racked up 11 tackles for the Blazers to go with his interception for a touchdown.

West Alabama finishes its home schedule by hosting Mississippi College Saturday at 2 p.m. Valdosta State travels to Delta State.
