Tigers Escape With 14-13 Win Over Mississippi College

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Tyler Rogers and Rashaad Lee combined to rush for 177 yards in the second half, and for the second time in three weeks Mark Grant made a game-winning kick as West Alabama escaped with a 14-13 Gulf South Conference victory over Mississippi College Saturday at Tiger Stadium.

West Alabama keeps its playoff hopes alive and improved to 7-3 overall, 3-3 in GSC play. Mississippi College dropped to 2-7 and 0-6.

"Our number one goal every week is to get one more point than our opponent. That's first and foremost," UWA head coach Brett Gilliland said. "Now, it would be better if it was more than one, but one is all it takes."

Lee and Grant gave UWA its first lead of the game, with Lee running 33 yards for a touchdown to cap a 12-play, 95-yard drive with 11:33 left in the game. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty following the touchdown forced Grant to make the extra point kick from 35 yards.

The PAT ricocheted off the inside of the right upright and through to give the Tigers the margin victory and Grant the West Alabama career scoring record with 181 points. The junior from Panama City, Florida had kicked a game=winning field goal on Oct. 24 at Delta State.

"It is humbling to achieve this record, but its more important that we won the game," Grant said. "There are 10 other guys out there every time we kick, so this is a team record.

"I try to hit every kick the same," Grant said when asked if the increased distance made the record-setter more difficult. "I just try to keep my head down and drive through it. Every kick means something, but 181 was special."

On a day when a drizzling rain set in early and stayed late, West Alabama played without much emotion early against a Choctaw team still looking for its first GSC win as it makes its transition back to NCAA Division II.

The Tigers had just 40 yards total offense in the first quarter and 177 at the half before finishing with 377. UWA picked up 174 of its 225 yards rushing in the second half. Rogers finished with 98 yards on 13 carries and Lee tallied 78 on 13.

"It was obviously not the effort we wanted. We have to learn to handle our surroundings a little better," Gilliland said. "The rain wasn't ideal, but it was raining on both teams and we lacked emotion and energy early on."

Mississippi College led 3-0 at the half and 13-7 after three quarters. Tyler Poe nailed field goals from 38 and 39 yards, but missed a possible game-winner wide right from 40 yards with 2:17 to play. Josh Dixon scored on a 59-yard run in the third period to cap off Choctaws points.
After holding UWA following he missed field goal, Mississippi College had one more chance with no timeouts and the ball at the Tiger 37 after UWA punter Jordan Ikner mishandled the long snap from Jared Adair.

West Alabama's defense rose to the challenge, forcing three incompletions and a tackle for loss by Quentin Harton to preserve the victory.

"That stop was priceless," said Harton, who led Tiger tacklers with nine. "We knew we had to bow our necks and get the stop. It was a good way to go out on my final home game at Tiger Stadium."

Terry Samuel and Brandon Keel chipped in seven tackles each. Samuel and Harton both recorded a pair of tackles for loss.

Alex Johnson and Mike Hall had nine tackles apiece for the Choctaws. Reggie Bennett intercepted Thompson in the end zone and returned it 42 yards to stop a second-quarter UWA scoring threat.

In his first action since Oct. 3 against West Georgia, junior quarterback Trent Thompson completed 20-of-29 passes for 152 yards. Javae Swindle had five receptions and Daryl Collins four for the Tigers.

Chris Ingram gained 129 yards on 19 carries for Mississippi College to lead all rushers. Dixon finished with 88 yards on seven carries. Sharone Wright, who moved from defensive back to quarterback this week for the Choctaws, completed 2-of-9 passes for 50 yards.

West Alabama closes the regular season Saturday at North Alabama. Game time is 1:30 p.m. Mississippi College travels to Delta State for a 3 p.m. kickoff
