Four Score in Double Figures, UWA Women Improve to 3-0

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Led by Ariel Wilson's 18 points, West Alabama had four players score in double figures on the way to a 77-67 women's college basketball victory over Stillman College Tuesday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

West Alabama improved to 3-0 with the win. Stillman dropped to 2-1. The two teams play each other again Monday in Tuscaloosa.

Wilson converted 7-of-12 field goal attempts and Moejha Calmes made 7-of-11 to score 17 points to pace the Tigers. Sydney King chipped in 13 points and freshman Chloe Culpepper added 10.

"Moe (Calmes) carried us in the first half and Chloe in the second," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "Ariel just continues to make things happen throughout and Sydney King is a player waiting to happen."

Following a slow start, West Alabama outscored Stillman 23-11 in the second quarter to take a 33-24 lead into the locker room at the half. UWA put together an 11-2 run to start third quarter and led by as many as 19 points with 5:19 left in the period.

Stillman cut the Tigers lead to 57-50 with 7:00 left in the game before Culpepper and Wilson scored buckets on the same trip to stretch the lead to 61-50 a minute later and keep the game effectively out of reach for Stillman. Culpepper scored and was fouled, but missed the free throw leading to a Wilson put back.

"That's the sign of a young team when you can't hold a lead, but tonight was better because we didn't give the lead up like we did Friday at Spring Hill," Cram said. "You can not be upset about being 3-0 and I want our team to understand that, but I also want them to understand that we are also playing for December and January."

West Alabama shot 41 percent from the floor (28-67) while limiting Stillman to just 30 percent (25-81). Both teams collected 50 rebounds. West Alabama made 15-of-18 free throw attempts, while Stillman was just 14-of-24.

"It took some time for us to get going, but we started getting better in the second quarter," Wilson said. "We have to get better at maintaining a lead and stop letting teams come back on us."

Catherine Taylor had nine rebounds to lead West Alabama, followed by King with eight and Wilson with seven. Caleb Washington blocked three shots.

Victoria Douglass recorded a double-double for Stillman, scoring 16 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Schenia Battle added 13 points, followed by Joclyn Ramos with 12 and Earnicia Washington with 10.
