Tigers Earn Third Straight Trip to GSC Tournament Title Match

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – In a rematch of last year's Gulf South Conference Tournament Title game, West Alabama reigned supreme again, this time earning a third consecutive trip to the Championship. The Tigers defeated Shorter 1-0 in the semifinal match at Tiger Stadium on Friday.

The defending GSC Tournament champions and this year's regular season conference champs, West Alabama, improves to 9-6-2 overall. Shorter is eliminated from the tournament with an 8-9-2 record.

"It wasn't our best performance tonight, but we got the result we wanted," said UWA head coach Matthew Thorne. "It was a bit of chalk and cheese out there and there were very few rookies out there tonight. Shorter is a hard team to breakdown and it was a battle to the end. It was a game of two halves. We were a bit choppy in the first half but cleaned things up in the second."

Clay Green netted the game-winning goal in the 20th minute on an assist from Harrison Roberts. For Green, it was his third goal of the season; second game-winner. It was Roberts' first career assist.

Shorter retaliated in the second half, out-shooting the Tigers 9-6 in the period to lead the overall shot count 10-11. Green finished 3-for-5 shots on-goal, while Fernando De Barros came off the bench to lead the Hawks 2-for-2.

Brad Louis (5-4) made seven saves in his second appearance in the tournament to take the win. Austen Trevers (8-8-2) made three save to pick up the loss.

"We are not here to play bingo, we are in it to win it," Thorne said. "Our guys knew what the goals were at the beginning of the season. We had never won the regular season title before, and we did that. Now we have to be ready to take on West Florida for the tournament title."

Sunday's championship game will be a rematch of West Alabama's first appearance in the tournament title when the Tigers fell to West Florida 2-1 in Pensacola, Fla. This year's final match will be on UWA's home pitch in Tiger Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
