LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama Men's Soccer earned its second straight Gulf South Conference Tournament title with a 2-0 victory over West Florida in the Championship on Sunday.
West Alabama, who also earned the regular season GSC title, improve to 10-6-2 overall. West Florida ends its season at 12-6.
Harrison Roberts was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament, while
Brad Louis,
Jean-Baptiste Meyniel and
Clay Green all earned All-Tournament honors.
"As I said on Friday, we are not here to play bingo, we are in it to win it," said UWA head coach
Matthew Thorne.
"In the first half we did well, but it was like kissing your sister. It was good but it wasn't great. We stepped up in the second half and proved ourselves against a quality West Florida side. Throughout the attack and the defense every player was quality. Everyone played there part. Even the guys that didn't see action today played a role in this championship."
After a scoreless stalemate in the first half, the Tigers unloaded in the second period with two goals in a span of four minutes.
Freshman
Jean-Baptiste Meyniel netted his first career game-winning goal in the 72
nd minute on an assist from
AJ Williams. Fellow freshman
Harrison Roberts recorded his first career goal in the 76
th minute on an assist by
Patrick Carroll.
Brad Louis (6-4) recorded his third straight shutout with two saves. He now holds five total shutouts in 10 appearances. Andre Moreira (6-4) took the loss in the net for the Argonauts, making 4-of-6 saves.
UWA out-shot West Florida 13-6 through both halves, led by
Christian Adkins who finished 2-for-2. Michael Starkey and Andrew Hitt each shot 1-for-1 for the Argos.
