CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The West Alabama defense stood tall at the net combining for a season high of 14 team blocks to defeat Lee University 3-2 in Gulf South Conference volleyball action Saturday.
West Alabama improved to 10-18 overall and 8-10 in the GSC. Lee drops to 12-16 and 7-11. Both teams swapped sets with the Tigers winning set one 25-19, set three 25-23 and set five 15-12. The Flames took set two 25-19 and set four 25-14.
"Tonight was a fantastic effort by the entire team," said UWA head coach
Jordan Lay. "They stayed in the match the whole way through. They battled through frustrating sets and errors, and they did so together. This is a big win for us and good momentum going into the last two matches at home."
Seven different Tigers helped with the blocking effort, led by GSC Freshman of the Week,
Jaime Lancellot, with nine block assists.
Taylin McCarver,
Yanesha Johnson and
Shanna Witt each assisted with four.
"Defense was superb behind the block, and our attack remained aggressive the whole match," Lay said. "Overall a very solid performance and a solid win for the team."
Briana Sandifer and Vic Collins led the dig game with 17 digs each, followed by
Abby Ames with 16 and
Callie Murphy with 11.
Sandifer and Murphy each finished with double-doubles. Sandifer led the offense hitting .410 attack percentage with 20 kills; her second most of the season. Murphy supported the attack with 26 assists.
Lee finished with only six team blocks, but led 69-58 in kills. Four Flames tallied double-digit kill marks, led by Silvia Sarton with 25 kills, hitting .261.
West Alabama volleyball returns home to wrap up the 2015 regular season with its final two matches. The Tigers take on Christian Brothers on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in Pruitt Hall, followed by Union University on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
