HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – West Alabama freshman guard
Jake Jobling sank 25 points, shooting 7-of-11 from beyond the 3-point arc to lead the Tigers to a 74-66 victory over nationally ranked No. 19 Alabama Huntsville in Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball action on Thursday. The Chargers, who average 86 points per game, were held to a season low scoring by the UWA defense.
West Alabama captures its first road win of the season to improve to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the GSC. Alabama Huntsville suffers its first home loss of the year, dropping to 5-3 and 2-1.
"It's quite an effort to come in here and win. Not many people are able to do that," said UWA head coach
Allen Sharpe. "I told the guys before the game that I had never beat
UAH, so we said we might as well do it tonight. The guys really stepped up and made some big plays down the stretch to seal the deal."
"Jobling made big shots for us tonight. We talked about making the big shots and guys stepping up to do that, and Jake did, especially late. It shows you how important recruiting is. Those shots weren't anything I drew up, they were just a guy making the plays."
In the final two and a half minutes, Jobling gave the Tigers two of its four second half leads with key 3-point field goals. His final 3-pointer came with 1:17 left to play to put UWA up 69-66 and countered a three from Greg Gardner that tied the game at 66-66.
UWA completed all five of its free throws down the stretch to maintain its lead. The Tigers combined to hit 21-of-25 at the charity stripe, with

Jake Jobling each hitting all of their free throw attempts.
Midway through the first half, UWA went on a 10 point run with the help of three straight Jobling 3-point field goals. After the Chargers cut the deficit to two points, the Tigers built their lead back up to take a 39-29 lead at halftime. Jobling finished the half with 14 points, shooting 4-of-6 from the field; all from behind the 3-point arc.
Deontay Ewing set his season high of points and rebounds. He totaled 18 points and led the team with nine boards. He also led the team at the free throw line hitting 6-for-6.
Simeon Dennis also had double-digit points in the first half, hitting 3-of-7 from the field and 3-of-3 from the free throw line to tally 10 points. He finished the game with 14.
The Tiger defense held UAH's leading scorer, Seab Webster to no points, as he finished 0-for-7 from the field. Greg Gardner led the Chargers with 19 points hitting 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. Brandon Roberts followed with 18 points.
West Alabama Men's Basketball remains on the road to take on North Alabama on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
