UAH Controls Boards in 72-63 GSC Win over West Alabama

HUNTSVILLE – Alabama Huntsville had 14 more second chance points and outrebounded West Alabama by 12 on the way to a 72-63 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over the Tigers Thursday at Spragins Hall.

UAH improved to 5-2 with the win, 2-1 in the GSC. West Alabama dropped to 4-3 and 1-2.

"It's frustrating. You have to play all parts of the basketball game and we didn't do that," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "Give UAH credit. They are a good, seasoned, veteran basketball team.

"We didn't rebound, especially on the offensive boards, and we didn't close out" Cram said. "The effort was there and we played hard. We played some good minutes, just not enough."

The Chargers collected 40 rebounds and West Alabama 28, with just six of those coming on the offensive end, leading to only two second chance points. UAH shot 43 percent (28-64) fro the floor and UWA converted 45 percent (27-59).

Dina Sanders scored 21 points to lead Alabama Huntsville scoring. She was followed by Halle Jarnagin with 14 and Josi Saunders with 12. Jarnagin led the Chargers with eight rebounds, followed by Sanders with seven.

West Alabama led 17-13 after shooting 50 percent (8-of-16) from the floor in the first quarter. The Tigers stretched the lead to nine points with 7:35 left in the second quarter before the Chargers came storming back to tie it up at 30-30 with 3:47 to go before the half and led 39-35 at the break.

UAH stretched its lead to 12 points with 3:37 left in the third quarter before West Alabama chipped back to cut the Charger advantage to 54-49 after three periods. UWA cut the lead to 54-52 early in the fourth quarter on a three-pointer from Latisha McCullum. It was as close as the Tigers would come.

Ariel Wilson scored 19 points to lead West Alabama, followed by Sydney King with 15. Both are UWA career bests for them. McCullum chipped in 10 points. Wilson and Moejha Calmes had five rebounds apiece.

The Tigers conclude a two-game road swing at North Alabama on Sunday. Tipoff is at 2 p.m. and the game can be heard locally on ESPN 104.9. UAH travels to West Georgia on Saturday.
