UNA Barrage of Threes Too Much for West Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. – North Alabama opened a super-sized can of three-point field goals on the way to defeating West Alabama, 80-56, Sunday at Flowers Hall. The Lions made 16 treys on the way to the Gulf South Conference victory.

UNA improved to 2-7 overall and 1-3 in the GSC with the victory. UWA lost for the third straight game and dropped to 4-4 and 1-3.

The Lions made 16-of-34 three-pointers in the game while hitting 30-of-69 (43%) from the floor overall. West Alabama made just 34 percent (22-of-64) from the floor. The Tigers turned the ball over 21 times leading to 23 UNA points.

"We didn't show up. That is obviously the worst we have played," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "I am so disappointed in our lack of effort and that's on me.

"I have never been a part of a club that does not compete and just lays down," Cram said, "I am not about to start now."

With no resemblance to the one-win team that started the game, North Alabama connected on 9-of-20 three-point field goal attempts in the first half. West Alabama had just nine total field goals in the first 20 minutes as the Lions built a 42-25 lead. UNA outscored West Alabama 20-7 in the second period.

Jaclyn Heath tied the UNA school record with seven three-pointers and led all scorers with 26 points. Elise Holden chipped in 14 points for the Lions and Shunice Herron scored 12. Holden had nine rebounds and Herron seven assists to lead North Alabama.

Ariel Wilson scored 19 points, including a 10-point third quarter, to lead West Alabama scoring. Wilson was the only UWA player in double figures. It was her second consecutive 19-point effort on the two-game road trip that began at Alabama Huntsville. Latisha McCullum collected seven rebounds.

"Ariel has to work for every point she gets," Cram said. "We really need somebody else to step up and help her – I am just very disappointed."

West Alabama returns home to play No. 9 Union Thursday at Pruitt Hall. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
