Union Hands UWA 86-63 Loss at Home

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Union dominated West Alabama in the paint on the way to an 86-63 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over the Tigers Thursday at Pruitt Hall.

The 14th ranked Lady Bulldogs outscored UWA 50-24 in the paint, shot 52 percent (37-for-70) from the floor and placed four players in double figures on the way to their 10th win of the season.

Union improved to 10-1 overall, 4-1 in GSC play. West Alabama lost for the fourth consecutive time, dropping to 4-5 and 1-4.

"We are still learning, but we have to be able to score the basketball," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We had one player in double figures and she came off the bench to do that."

Freshman Sydney King scored 13 points to lead West Alabama, who won the rebounding battle 45-35.  UWA's leading scorer, Ariel Wilson, was limited to nine points but managed to grab eight rebounds. Brianna Davidson collected a career-high nine boards for the Tigers.

"Everybody is going to continue to double team Ariel, and until our upperclassmen decide to step up and our inside game grows up, we are going to continue to struggle," Cram said. "I promise you we won't quit, but we have to learn to play four quarters and we aren't there yet."

Jada Smith scored 15 points to lead Union, followed by Tiarra Caldwell with 14. Chelsea Bodiford and Bethany Lytle chipped in 11 apiece. Kelsey Risner had a game-high 11 rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs.

West Alabama trailed just 19-16 after the first period, but Union outscored the Tigers 45-24 over the next two quarters to put the game away. The Tigers shot just 38 percent from the floor (26-68).

West Alabama is host to Christian Brothers Saturday at 2 p.m. Union travels to West Georgia, also on Saturday.
