LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Led by
Catherine Taylor with 18 points, West Alabama had four players score in double figures on the way to a 69-60 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over Christian Brothers Saturday at Pruitt Hall.
Â
Snapping a four-game losing streak, the Tigers improved to 5-5 overall and 2-4 in GSC play heading into the Christmas break. Christian Brothers' modest win streak stopped at two and the Lady Bucs dropped to 4-5 and 2-4.
Â
"What a relief to get that monkey off our back," UWA head coach Rust Cram said. "We kept our poise down the stretch, and to have four players in double figures is fantastic. That is the kind of thing we have been working for."
Â
Taylor came off the bench to score 18, while
Peyton Parker scored a UWA-career high 13 points.
Latisha McCullum chipped in 12 and
Ariel Wilson 11. Taylor and Wilson had six rebounds each to lead the Tigers.
Â
"Cat came off the bench and really got going in the second half to have a great game," Cram said. "She had some key baskets to stop runs for them and
Peyton Parker played as aggressively as she has all year."
Â
Down 27-24 at the half and 46-44 after three quarters, West Alabama stretched the score to the final margin by winning the fourth period, 25-14. The game was tied 10 times and the lead changed hands 14 times.
Â
"We did the things we wanted to do today," Cram said. "We limited their three-pointers, their second chance points and fast break points. I am pleased with that."
Â
Christian Brothers was a paltry 5-for-23 from behind the three-point line, scored just six second chance points and did not score on the break. Samantha Reeves scored 16 points to lead the Lady Bucs, while Madison Luckett had a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds.
Â
West Alabama is off until Jan. 2 when the Tigers host Shorter in a GSC game at 2 p.m. CBU is host to Harding University on Dec. 30.
