Wilson and Adams Put on Show, Shorter Beats UWA 85-79

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Ariel Wilson matched her career scoring high with 34 points while Shorter's Taylor Adams scored 29 and collected 14 rebounds as the Lady Hawks defeated UWA, 85-79, in women's Gulf South Conference basketball Saturday at Pruitt Hall.

The win improved Shorter to 8-3 overall, 5-2 in the GSC. West Alabama dropped to 5-6 and 2-5.

Wilson's 34 came with the aid of just one three-pointer, as the junior from Brandon, Miss., made 15-of- 29 field goal attempts and also led the Tigers with seven rebounds. It was the third time in her collegiate career Wilson had scored 34 points, with the first two coming before she transferred from Belhaven University.

Catherine Taylor made 7-of-10 from the floor to chip in 18 points, Taylor made 4-of-7 three-pointers in 29 minutes. No other UWA player scored in double digits.

Adams, who leads the GSC in rebounding, made 10-of-17 field goal tries and 9-of-9 free throw attempts on the way to her 29 points. Shakierya McClendon followed Adams with 18 points, while Shaundricka Mann added 12 and Kayla Tillie 10.

UWA jumped out to a 13-4 lead to start the game, but after taking a timeout at the 5:55 mark in the first quarter, the Lady Hawks went on a 16-7 run to cut the lead to 21-20 at the end of the first quarter and led 42-39 at the half.

After Shorter extended its lead to 66-56 after three quarters, the Tigers came roaring back to cut the Lady Hawks lead to 82-79 on a 15-foot jumper by Taylor with 24 seconds left. It was as close as UWA would get.

"The positive is we didn't quit," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We played well early in the game and then I saw improvement late."

With West Alabama playing two true freshmen in the paint and as many as four different post players in the game, the Lady Hawk inside game had their way with the Tigers. SU had 52 points in the paint while West Alabama's regular post players combined for two points and five rebounds.

"We have too many weaknesses that are getting exposed," Cram said. "Right now our post game is awful. We don't have to have an All-American in there, but if we could just get 12 to 15 points from the post it would be a huge help."

Cram continue to lament the Tigers' post play as the reason for the discrepancy in free throws, with Shorter making 24-of-31 and West Alabama just 4-of-6.

"We can't continue to leave all the scoring to Ariel and Cat," Cram said. "(Shorter coach) Vic (Mitchell) is a great coach who has been around a long time. He just kept pounding us inside."

Both teams shot well from the floor, with Shorter making 53 percent (29-of-54) and West Alabama 52 percent (35-of-67). The Lady Hawks outrebounded UWA 33-28 and recorded nine steals.

West Alabama closes out a four-game homestand Monday against Lee. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m. Shorter travels to West Georgia on Monday.
