West Alabama Starts GSC Play With a 69-64 Win Over MC

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Catherine Taylor and Ariel Wilson combined for 38 points to lead West Alabama to a 69-64 Gulf South Conference victory over Mississippi College Thursday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

The win improved West Alabama to 4-1 overall, 1-0 in the GSC play. Mississippi College dipped to 2-2 and 0-1.

In a game where the lead changed hands 10 times and was tied on four instances, West Alabama's bench made the difference, outscoring the Choctaws 20-6.

"All of our games have been this close this year, all five of them," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "Tonight we finished it better than we have all season. We are young and still learning to play consistently."

Taylor made 5-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc on a 6-for-13 shooting night to notch her highest point total since transferring to UWA from Tennessee Tech. She also made a pair of free throws with 31 seconds left to ice the game away for the Tigers.

"Once I hit those first two threes I knew I had a couple more in me," Taylor said. "I spent a lot of time in the gym since we lost Monday night and I felt a lot more confident about my shot. I have put in a lot of work since Monday."

Wilson scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds, tying her with freshman Caleb Washington, who also gathered seven boards. Peyton Parker dished out four assists and had six rebounds from her point guard position.

"Ariel is still learning, but she is getting better and better with each game," Cram said. "We have five new people out there most of the time, so we are still getting to know each other. I am looking forward to watching this team grow."

Chloe Roberts scored 17 points to lead four Mississippi College players in double figures. Kristen Sampson chipped in 12, Toni Woods 11 and Allie Hill 10 for the Choctaws, who shot 44 percent (25-56) from the floor. UWA shot 38 percent (23-60).

West Alabama returns to GSC play Saturday by hosting Delta State (4-0, 1-0). Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Pruitt Hall. Mississippi College travels to West Georgia on Sunday.
