Lady Statesmen Defeat Tigers 57-51

LIVINGSTON , Ala. – Chelsey Rhodes scored 33 points to lead Delta State to a 57-51 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over West Alabama Saturday at Pruitt Hall.

The win kept Delta State undefeated at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the GSC play. West Alabama dropped to 4-2 and 1-1.

"We played hard and I thought we executed our plan well," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "Delta State is one of the top teams in this conference, a team with a lot of experience. If we can stay close with a team like that this early, then I believe we are headed in the right direction."

Rhodes converted 12-of-29 field goal attempts, including five three-pointers, while recording three assists and four steals. No other Lady Statesmen player scored in double figures. Anissa Jackson had eight rebounds for DSU.

"Chelsey Rhodes is one of the elite scorers in this conference. There is a reason I voted her the preseason MVP of the GSC and we saw it today," Cram said. "She is an experienced veteran who knows how to beat you."

Catherine Taylor led West Alabama, scoring 14 points and grabbing eight rebounds. She was the only Tiger in double figures. Brianna Davidson collected seven rebounds, five offensive, for UWA.

In a game where the lead changed hands just four times and was tied three, Delta State's biggest lead was 10 points early in the second quarter. UWA's largest lead was two points, but the Tigers cut the DSU lead to 50-49 on a Taylor layup with 2:19 to play.

From that point Rhodes scored the final seven DSU points to put the game away.

"We keep killing ourselves at crucial times," Cram said. "I know it comes with a lack of experience, but we have to find a way to get there."

West Alabama plays at Alabama Huntsville on Thursday. Delta State is host to Christian Brothers the same day.
