Tigers Play Long Ball in Sweep of Miles College

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama blasted four home runs on the way to an 8-0 win over Miles College in the second game of a college baseball doubleheader to sweep the Golden Bears Thursday at Tartt Field. The Tigers won the first game, 12-1.

The win extended West Alabama's winning streak to five games and leaves the Tigers at 5-3 heading into Gulf South Conference play against Delta State this weekend. Miles dropped to 1-8.

Tyler Lee, Brock Montgomery and Eddie Kieffer all hit their first home runs as a Tiger, while Jake Bush crushed his second long ball of the year. Montgomery also tripled in his first start as a Tiger.

West Alabama pounded out 19 hits in the doubleheader, with Mitch Holgate and Jack Cockrum collecting three each. Holgate and Cockrum each tripled and had a pair of singles. Bush added a single to his homer.

"We swung the bats decently and scored a lot, but we also left a lot of runners on base," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "I was excited for Brock, Tyler and Eddie to all get their first UWA home runs today."

UWA starters Josh Jones (1-0) and Severino Signa (1-0) earned the pitching wins on a day when seven Tiger pitchers saw action. Five UWA pitchers combined for the shutout in the nightcap. Miles starters Justin Bartley and Austin Pate were charged with the losses.

Jones struck out seven and scattered five hits in the first game. Signa pitched a scoreless two innings, allowing two hits, in the second game. Neal Lambert, Donnie Elliott, David Cromer and Blaine Price all pitched one scoreless inning in game two.

"Josh Jones pitched well and it was good to see Sig back in flow after almost two years of being out," Rundles said. "Defensively I thought we made some tough plays look easy and routine."

West Alabama is host to Delta State in a doubleheader Saturday to start a three-game GSC series. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
