UWA Baseball Sweeps Delta State to Open GSC Play

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama came from seven runs down to win game one and then pounded out 15 hits in the nightcap to sweep Delta State in the Gulf South Conference baseball opener for both teams Saturday at Tartt Field.  UWA won the opener 8-7 and then took the second game 12-7.

UWA extended its winning streak to seven games with the sweep. The Tigers are 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the GSC. Delta State dropped to 1-5 and 0-2.

"This was a great way to start conference play," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "We learned a lot about ourselves today and I'm excited to see how we respond tomorrow."

The Tigers and the Statesmen complete the three-game series with a single game Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.

After spotting Delta State seven runs in the first four innings of game one, the Tigers responded with a long ball barrage to get back into the game and eventually win. Mitch Holgate, Tanner Rainey and Jake Bush all belted two-run homers as UWA tied the game at 7-7 after six innings.

Holgate reached on a single and then scored the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth on a throwing error by DSU third baseman Ethan Gill.

The Tigers continued the extra base hit parade in the second game, building a 12-3 lead with six doubles and another Holgate homer. Delta State managed to score four runs in the bottom of the seventh in the second game for the final margin.

Rainey collected five hits, including adding two doubles to his homer. Jake Bush drove in six runs in the two games on four hits, including the home run and a pair of doubles. Holgate and Jack Cockrum each had four hits on the day, with Holgate driving in five runs. Adam Chamblee had two doubles for UWA as well.

"In game two we swung the bats very well, probably as well as we have in the last two or three years," Rundles said. "Even the outs we made were noisy."

Rainey (1-0) picked up the pitching win in game one in relief, but it was middle reliever Donnie Elliott who stopped the bleeding after starter Jorge Cruz allowed seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits over four innings.

"Our bullpen saved us in game one," Rundles said. "The key to that win was the job Donnie Elliott did putting up zeros after we got down early."

Starter Fernando Gonzalez (2-0) worked six-plus innings in the second game for the win. Blaine Price picked up his first save by getting out of a bases-loaded jam to end the game. Nick Goza (0-2) took the DSU loss in relief in the first game, while starter Austin Rice (0-2) was tagged with the loss in the nightcap.

Trent Giambrone had five hits for Delta State over the two games, including reaching base five times in the opener. Gill drive in five runs for the Statesmen.
