DSU Snaps UWA Baseball Win Streak at Seven Games

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Delta State scored three unearned runs in the final two innings to take a 4-3 Gulf South Conference baseball victory over West Alabama Sunday at Tartt Field.

The Statesmen improved to 2-5 overall, 1-2 in the GSC, while snapping a seven-game winning streak for the Tigers. UWA is 7-4 and 2-1.

"Drew Milligan set the tone for the first part of the game by not allowing a hit through 18 outs," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "In the last two innings it just came down to us not completing the job."

Marc McMillian's solo home run over the left field wall in the third inning was all Delta State needed early on as Milligan worked six innings of no-hit baseball. The Statesmen starter ended up allowing one run on four hits while striking out seven.

Jake Bush led off the UWA half of the seventh with a single to break up Milligan's no hit bid and later scored on a two-out single by Parker Madden.

Delta State capitalized in the eighth when Ben Pickard reached on a two-out error by UWA shortstop Daniel Bolte and scored on a double off the bat of Ethan Gill. Gill would score on a Matt Barrett single to give DSU a 3-1 advantage.

West Alabama answered in the bottom of the eighth, tying the game at 3-3 when Parker Madden walked, was balked to second by reliever Witt Haggard and then scored on a Nick Goza balk. Bush then singled in Mitch Holgate, who had walked and advanced to second on the Goza balk.

Hunter Twitty walked to lead off the ninth for Delta State, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dalton Skelton and then scored when UWA second baseman Luigi Mendez mishandled Trent Giambrone's ground ball.

"We put ourselves in a position to win and then played ourselves out of it," Rundles said. "Still, we win as a team and we lose as a team, so we aren't going to be in the business of pointing fingers. We will take this and grow from it."

Goza (1-2) retired the Tigers in order on the ninth to pick up his first win of the year. UWA reliever Tanner Rainey (1-1) was tagged with the loss.

Bush had two of West Alabama's five hits, while three UWA pitchers limited Delta State to four hits and struck out 13. Tiger starter Gandy Stubblefield allowed just two hits and struck out seven over six innings.

West Alabama travels to Mobile to play at Spring Hill on Wednesday. Game time is 5 p.m.
