Tigers Split Saturday at UWG But Win GSC Series

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Mitch Holgate drove in four runs, Luigi Mendez had a pair of doubles and Jack Cockrum collected three hits in the second game as West Alabama split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader with West Georgia Saturday at Cole Field. UWA won the first game, 6-4, and UWG took the nightcap, 5-2.

The split leaves West Alabama 10-5 overall and 4-2 in GSC play. UWA has won both of its GSC series this season. West Georgia is 8-5 and 2-4.

Holgate got the scoring underway early for West Alabama in the first game, hitting his third home run of the year in the first inning. Holgate's shot scored Adam Chamblee, who opened the game with a double.

Tanner Rainey gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead with a solo homer with two outs in the sixth inning, his second long ball of the year.

UWA stretched the lead in the first game when Luigi Mendez doubled down the left field line with the bases loaded to drive in three and give the Tigers a 6-0 lead.

West Georgia mounted a late comeback in game one, cutting the UWA lead with two-run homers from Payton Mann in the eighth and Troy Brown in the ninth inning.

Fernando Gonzalez (2-0) allowed just one hit, struck out five and walked six over six innings. Rainey earned his fourth save striking out Sumner McWhorter with a man on in the ninth. Wolves starter Jamie Sexton (3-1) absorbed the loss.

Cockrum had three hits and Mendez two for the Tigers in the second game. Holgate drove in both Tiger runs with a double in the fifth inning.

UWG reliever Chris Burdett (1-0) picked up the win in relief of starter A.J. Sunstrom. Tyler Gunnin worked the final inning of the second game for his second save. UWA starter Gandy Stubblefield (0-2) absorbed the loss.

The Tigers return to Tartt Field to host Montevallo on Wednesday at 3 p.m. before getting back into GSC play next weekend at North Alabama. West Georgia travels to Georgia Regents on Wednesday.
