CARROLLTON, Ga. – West Georgia shot 11-of-15 from the 3-point line to defeat West Alabama 83-77 and snap the Tigers six game win streak in Gulf South Conference men's basketball action on Thursday.
West Alabama ends the regular season with its most wins since the 1981-82 season at 20-10 overall. The With five league games left around the conference, the Tigers currently sit tied for second place with West Georgia at 15-7 in the GSC, while the Wolves finish its season 20-7.
"We had six in a row going and you hate to see that kind of stuff end," said UWA head coach
Allen Sharpe. "We knew it was going to be a challenge coming in here and trying to defend this team. I just hate it for the guys, because they really wanted this one."
The Wolves shot 5-of-7 from the 3-point arc in the first half, while the Tigers failed to sink any of their four attempts. Deontre Brown hit a 3-point field goal as the first half expired to give UWG a 26-25 lead. Both teams finished just above 30 percent from the field in the first half.
West Georgia improved to shooting 6-of-8 three point field goals in the second half, taking a 15 points lead with 10 minutes left to play. The Tigers continued to fight, cutting the deficit to two points on a
Charles Eaton 3-pointer with 14 seconds left. The Wolves secured the win at the free throw line, shooting 11-of-12 in the second half.
"We knew at the half, with their score being so low that they would make adjustments," Sharpe said.
"We had the score right where we wanted it in the first half, but in the second, it just got out of control. We didn't do a good enough job defending in the second half. We cannot give up 83 points and expect to win. We fought and made it a game there at the end, but we just gave up too many points in the second half."
Deonte Stocks led UWG with 20 points; 17 in the second half. Stocks was 8-of-16 from the field and 2-of-2 from the 3-point arc. West Georgia improved its field goal percentage in the second half, hitting 20-of-37.
West Alabama lead 48-32 points in the paint, but finished 2-of-9 total 3-point field goals.
Justin Wright led with 26 points; 15 in the second half.
Deontaye Ewing and
Charles Eaton followed with 12 points each, while
Kenric McCants added 11.
UWG led the rebounding effort 38-31 to outscore the Tigers 15-8 in second chance points.
West Alabama will return to action as one of four host schools in the first round of the GSC tournament on Tuesday. The Tigers, who posted the best home record in the league this season of 12-1, will still await the tournament seeding that will be announced on Saturday following the final five regular season conference matchups.
