Gonzalez, Holgate Lead Tigers to 7-2 Win Over Palm Beach Atlantic

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Fernando Gonzalez pitched seven scoreless innings and Mitch Holgate reached base five times to lead West Alabama to a 7-2 college baseball victory over Palm Beach Atlantic Saturday at Tartt Field.

The win improved West Alabama to 2-3, while Palm Beach Atlantic dropped to 0-3. The Tigers and Sailfish finish the three-game series with a single game Sunday at noon.

"Fernando Gonzalez pitched outstanding. He was just wild enough to be effective, and I say that in a good way," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "He made big pitches in critical counts."

Gonzalez (1-0) allowed just two hits, struck out three and walked two on the way to his first win of the season. Tanner Rainey struck out pinch hitter Kevin Fry with the bases loaded in the ninth to earn his first save of the season. PBA starter Ryan Cota (0-1) absorbed the loss.

Holgate walked four times, drove in a run in the sixth inning and stole three bases to lead the UWA offensive attack. Eddie Kieffer had two hits and drove in a run. Luigi Mendez tripled and drove in a run for the Tigers, while Jack Cockrum had two RBI. Daniel Bolte and Rainey also drove in runs. Parker Madden had two stolen bases for the Tigers.

"For the second straight day the key was getting ahead early and having quality at bats," Rundles said. "Our goal is to have at least 50 percent quality at bats and today we were at 64 percent.

"Seven hits and 11 walks, plus moving runners with productive outs, makes for a good day," Rundles said. "Mitch had a big day and Eddie Kieffer had a couple of big knocks."

West Alabama built a 3-0 lead after two innings before adding a single run in the sixth, two more in the seventh and another run in the eighth inning accounted for the Tiger scoring.

Palm Beach Atlantic score both of its runs in the ninth inning, using three hits, a walk and a hit batter before Rainey slammed the door.

Peter Rivera had two hits of the Sailfish five, while the Tiger defense used some great plays to limit the PBA offensive output.

"Luigi Mendez made some tremendous plays at second base," Rundles said. "The kind of plays he made make differences in games."
