UWA Explodes Late for 10-5 Baseball Win over PBA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama exploded for eight runs in the sixth inning to score a come-from-behind 10-5 college baseball victory over Palm Beach Atlantic Sunday at Tartt Field.

The win completed a three-game sweep for the Tigers, now 3-3. Palm Beach Atlantic dropped to 0-4.

"I am pleased overall with the series and the sweep," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "We needed to win and get back on track, so that part is a good thing."

The Sailfish led 2-0 into the sixth inning, but West Alabama sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth, scoring eight runs on seven hits to take the lead for good.

Mitch Holgate, Jake Bush and Parker Madden all doubled in the big inning for the Tigers, with Bush getting two hits in the inning and Madden driving in two runs.

The Tigers pushed two more runs across in the seventh inning on RBI singles by Madden and Luigi Mendez. Ten of West Alabama's 13 hits came in the sixth and seventh innings.

"The first part of the game we weren't making offensive adjustments," Rundles said. "Their starter likes getting hitters to chase and we did. When we get into Gulf South Conference play we are going to have to adjust quicker.

"We finally got something started in sixth and put some hits together and had the big inning, but we had another letdown after that," Rundles said. "We have to learn to treat every opportunity like it's our last chance, have good at bats and not have base running errors."

Palm Beach Atlantic used a double, a single and a wild pitch to score three runs in the top of the eight for the final margin.

Brandon Pennington (1-0) picked up the pitching win in relief of starter Gandy Stubblefield. Sailfish starter Josh Turner (0-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs in the sixth after shutting the Tigers out until that point.

"I though Gandy kept us where we needed to be and then Penny came in and put up some zeros, but our big inning probably disrupted his rhythm a little," Rundles said. "Donnie Elliott came in and did a good job to take it the rest of the way."

Madden, Bush, Mendez, Tanner Rainey and Adam Chamblee all had two hits for West Alabama. Pat Kane had three hits and scored two runs for the Sailfish.

West Alabama continues its eight-game homestand by hosting Miles in a doubleheader Thursday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
