Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Philamlee and Threes Sink UWA Women

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Amy Philamlee poured in 34 points and Union converted 12-of-24 three point attempts to defeat West Alabama, 88-62, in Gulf South Conference women's basketball action Saturday at Pruitt Hall.

The win improves league-leading Union to 18-3 overall and 14-3 in GSC play. West Alabama dropped to 10-11 and 7-10.

Philamlee, who leads the GSC in scoring, made 8-of-13 from the floor and 14-of-15 free throw attempts while dishing out seven assists. DeAnna Thompson scored 22 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs. Amber Rechis chipped in 11 points.

"If we played that team 10 times we would get beat 10 times. That is the kind of program we are going to try to build here, but it will take a little time," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We are obviously not very deep at some positions and good skill people at their positions are going to eat us for lunch if we can't make the adjustments.

"For the first 10 or 12 minutes we played about as well as we can play, but we ended up putting them on the free throw line because we started getting tired," Cram said. "They opened up their lead from the free throw line in the first half."

Union made 11-of-12 free throw attempts in the first half and then 13-of-16 in the final 20 minutes.  The Lady Bulldogs also scored 26 points off 17 West Alabama turnovers. UWA shot just 34 percent from the floor.

"We came out flat in the second half and they took control, if they didn't have it already, in the first 10 or 11 minutes," Cram said. "We fought and didn't quit. We just have to keep working. Obviously we are not going to fix this overnight."

Britney McCloud led West Alabama scoring with 25 points, making 10-of-20 from the floor. Latisha McCullum was the only other Tiger in double figures with 15 points. McCloud led UWA with seven rebounds.

West Alabama plays its fourth straight game at home, hosting Lee Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Union is home against Valdosta State on Thursday.
