MOBILE, Ala. - The University of West Alabama softball team split a doubleheader with Spring Hill College winning game one 1-0 and dropping the second contest 2-1.
Â
West Alabama moves to 3-3 overall, while Spring Hill opens the season at 1-1, capturing its first win as a provisional member of NCAA Division II.Â
Â
Game one went scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when Treasure Rodreguez slapped a double to centerfield to score
Jordyn Whiddon from second base, giving the Tigers the winning 1-0 lead.Â
Â
The offense started early for the Badgers in the second game as Carmen Byrd was able to score courtesy of a Shea Blanchard triple in the bottom of the first inning. Blanchard would then score on a single by Mary Beth Glass.Â
Â
Ashley Stassin put the lone Tiger run on the board after scoring on a sacrifice fly by Mariah Chavez in the top of the fifth.Â
Â
Caroline Sagera pitched all 14 innings for the Badgers striking out 11 total batters; six in game one. She allowed three hits in the first game and on in the second.
Â
"It was nice to get out on the road and come home with a split," said UWA head coach
Will Atkinson. "It's an opportunity where you feel like you could have had two wins, but two teams went toe to toe today."
Â
"All the pitchers involved for both teams did a really good job. They kept our hitters off balance, but anytime we only give up two runs in a doubleheader I think we're going to have an opportunity to win a lot of ball games. I think both our pitchers did an outstanding job. It's just one of those things where you are not going hit a ton. You just have to put it behind you and be ready to go next week."
Â
Stassin (2-0) pitched a complete game in game one for the Tigers and held the Badger lineup to just five hits.
Alli Hall (1-2) completed all six innings of game two, giving up three hits and two runs, while recording five strikeouts.Â
Â
West Alabama will return to action Wednesday as it hosts non-conference opponent Tuskegee University to Livingston in a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the UWA Softball Complex.
