VALDOSTA, Ga. –
Tanner Rainey hit a three-run home run and
Gandy Stubblefield pitched seven shutout innings to lead West Alabama to a 7-0 Gulf South Conference baseball victory over Valdosta State Sunday at Billy Grant Field.
The victory was UWA's fourth straight and completed the three-game weekend sweep of the Blazers. The Tigers improved to 15-8 overall, 9-5 in GSC play. Valdosta State lost its fifth straight and fell to 13-10 and 7-7.
"I like the way we are playing right now. This is the way I knew we could play all along if we would stay committed through nine innings," UWA head coach
Gary Rundles said. "
Gandy Stubblefield got ground balls when he needed them to keep Valdosta State off the board."
Stubblefield (1-2) scattered eight hits, walked one and struck out five on the way to his first win at UWA after transferring from Texas A&M. The right-hander from Lufkin, Texas pitched out of two bases-loaded jams with less than two outs. Donnie Elliot and Rainey worked scoreless eighth and ninth innings to preserve the shutout. VSU starter Austin Glorius (1-2) took the loss.
West Alabama scored three runs in the third inning on just one hit, a two-run single from
Jack Cockrum. Glorius walked three and hit a batter in the frame. Rainey's three-run blast was the big hit in a four-run sixth for the Tigers.
Mitch Holgate had a pair of hits to pace a nine-hit West Alabama attack. The Tigers rapped out 38 hits in the three-game series against the Blazers. Valdosta State also collected nine hits, but the GSC's leading hitting team could not manage a run.
West Alabama continues a four-game road swing on Wednesday, traveling to historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Ala., to face Miles. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
