UWA Baseball Extends Win Streak to 10 Games With Sweep of CBU

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Five West Alabama pitchers gave up just one run over two games as the Tigers swept Christian Brothers in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at Tartt Field. UWA won the first game, 7-0, and the second, 6-1.

The sweep extended West Alabama's win streak to 10 games. The Tigers, winners of 11 of the last 12, improved to 21-8 overall and 14-5 in GSC play. Christian Brothers is 8-14 and 3-10.

Jorge Cruz (6-2) went 7.1 innings, scattering five hits, walking two and striking out six to earn the win in the first game. Fernando Gonzalez (6-1) struck out nine, allowing a run on three hits for the win in the second game. Three UWA relievers did not allow a hit.  CBU starters Peyton McArthur (2-3) and Taylor Seaman (1-2) took the losses.

"Today was about pitching," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "Our offense was not locked in early and the pitchers just kept throwing up zeroes until the hitters could lock in."

UWA right fielder Parker Madden went 4-for-8 in the doubleheader, driving in six runs and scoring three from the leadoff spot. Madden hit his third home run of the year, a three-run shot, in the first game.

Jack Cockrum and Daniel Bolte added three hits each for the Tigers in the two games for UWA. Cockrum drove in two runs in the second game. Adam Chamblee had two hits in the first game.

Cockrum extended his hitting streak to 11 games and Tanner Rainey his to 10 games with a double in the opener and a single in the second game. Nick Delgado saw his hitting streak snapped at 12 games by going 0-for-3 in the first game. Madden has a six-game hitting streak as well.

"Parker Madden and Jack Cockrum both had good days at the plate and Nick Delgado got a clutch hit late in the second game," Rundles said. "Although we won two games and I am happy about that, I did see some things we have to execute better down the stretch."

The West Alabama pitching staff allowed just eight hits combined in the two games. Casey Goodwin had two hits in the first game and Blain Curtis two in the nightcap for CBU. The Buccaneers lone run came when Curtis drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning of game two.

The Tigers and Buccaneers are scheduled to play game three of the series Sunday at Tartt Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
