Rainey Homers Twice and Tigers Steal 10 Bases in Win over CBU

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Tanner Rainey hit two home runs and West Alabama stole 10 bases on the way to a 10-2 Gulf South Conference baseball victory over Christian Brothers Sunday at Tartt Field.

The win extends West Alabama's win streak to 11 games and handed the Tigers a sweep of the three-game series with the Buccaneers. UWA is 22-8 overall and 15-5 in GSC play. CBU dropped to 8-15 and 3-11.

"Our guys are playing with as much confidence as I have seen around here in a long time and that's great to see," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "Another thing I really like is we are holding each other accountable in a positive way and that's how good teams operate."

West Alabama starter Gandy Stubblefield (3-2) worked eight innings allowing just four hits and two runs while striking out seven for the win. CBU starter Jack Parker (1-4) allowed four runs on four hits in four innings while taking the loss.

Rainey jumped started the West Alabama scoring with a towering solo homer, his sixth of the year, over the wall in left field with one out in the second inning. The senior from Folsom, La., added his seventh home run by legging out an inside the park job in a four-run UWA eighth.

Rainey finished the day 2-for-3 with five runs batted in to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, while Tiger catcher Jack Cockrum had his hitting streak stopped at 11 games. Nick Delgado also had a pair of hits for UWA.

Adam Chamblee stole three bases, while Cockrum and Mitch Holgate swiped two each as the Tigers ran at will. Completing the stolen base parade were Delgado, Luigi Mendez and Daniel Bolte. The Tigers have stolen 40 bases in 52 attempts over 30 games.

"Tanner had a big day at the plate and we were able to coax eight walks while taking advantage of some misplayed balls," Rundles said. "I thought Gandy Stubblefield was one pitch away from a masterpiece on the mound today."

The one mistake Stubblefield made was to Buccaneer designated hitter Mac Cooley, who blasted a line drive two-run homer over the left field wall in the sixth inning. The home run was Cooley's fourth of the season.

West Alabama is scheduled to host William Carey in a non-conference game Tuesday at 4 p.m. A junior varsity game against Faulkner State is scheduled for Monday at 2 p.m. weather permitting.
