Three-Run 7th All Tigers Need to Win 12th Straight

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama scored three runs in the seventh inning, coming from behind for a 3-1 victory over William Carey Tuesday at Tartt Field and extending the Tigers' winning streak to 12 games.

West Alabama improved to 23-8 with the victory, while William Carey had modest three-game win streak snapped and dropped to 20-16.

"About the best thing you can say about this one was that is only lasted two hours and 20 minutes and it was a 'W'", UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "Luigi Mendez and Nick Delgado got big hits when we need them in the seventh."

William Carey plated a single run in the fourth inning when Nick Lowe walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ramon Cedeno. Crusaders starting pitcher and loser Mason Woodrow (1-3) cruised through six innings before the UWA offense awakened in the seventh.

Eddie Kieffer singled to open the inning, was replaced by pinch runner Adam Chamblee who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jake Bush. Mendez singled in Bush before Delgado's two-out single drove in Mendez and Tanner Rainey, who was intentionally walked.

Brandon Pennington (3-1) picked up the pitching win in relief of starter Josh Jones, who allowed one run on four hits while striking out five. Pennington threw an inning and a third of scoreless baseball. After Brock Ward worked a scoreless eighth Tanner Rainey picked up his seventh save by pitching the ninth inning.

"You just can't say enough about the great job Josh Jones is doing for us in mid-week games," Rundles said. "It's tough to pitch well in these games and then have to sit it out on the weekend, but Josh exemplifies what being a good teammate is all about."

Mendez had two hits to lead the UWA attack. Rainey had his hitting streak snapped at 11 games despite walking twice and scoring a run. Mitch Holgate stole his team-leading 12th base of the season, good enough for second in the Gulf South Conference.

Tyler Richardson had a pair of hits for William Carey, including his ninth double. Larson Barkum also doubled for the Crusaders, his sixth.

West Alabama returns to GSC play Friday with a doubleheader at Shorter (13-12). First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. central time. Tiger fans can hear the action in the Twin States on ESPN 104.9 and globally at www.espn1049.com. Shorter's live stats can be accessed at http://www.sidearmstats.com/shorter/baseball/.
