Tigers Shutout Out Christian Brothers to Complete Series Sweep

LIVINGSTON, Ala.Jordyn Whiddon and Giana Cavallaro combined for seven runs batted in off of three hits each to lead West Alabama to 8-0 victory over Christian Brothers and completing the Gulf South Conference softball series sweep on Sunday.
 
West Alabama, who has not allowed a run in 12 innings, improves its win streak to six. The Tigers are now 15-16 overall and 7-13 in the GSC. Christian Brothers drops to 7-25 and 2-16.
 
Cavallaro recorded a hit in each at bat. Her first hit came in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single. Whiddon followed in the same inning with another RBI single to put the Tigers up 2-0.
 
Cavallaro brought in two more runs in the third inning, this time with double. Whiddon, again following suit doubled with the bases loaded in the fifth to add three runs. Treasure Rodriguez scored the game winning run on an infield error in the sixth inning to secure the sweep.
 
Rodriguez, Cavallaro and Lacey Santiago each finished with two runs, while Lydia North and Audrey Diekmann each contributed one.
 
Ashley Stassin (6-1) pitched all six innings to complete her second straight shutout. Christian Brothers tallied seven hits and left nine runners stranded, while West Alabama totaled 13 hits.
 
Kylie Steagall (2-9) opened the first four innings, allowing seven runs and 12 hits to record the loss.
 
"We just played the game very well today," said UWA head coach Will Atkinson.
 
"Our hitters did a good job of getting some key hits and I was really proud of how well our defense played. We communicated well and Ashley did very well in the circle. I am really proud of our lineup from top to bottom. They did a great job of just getting on base. I look forward to carrying this momentum into our next series on the road."
  
West Alabama softball returns to GSC action at Shorter University in a three game series beginning with a doubleheader on Friday. Game one is set for Noon (C.S.T.).
