LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama split a Gulf South Conference Softball doubleheader with Lee University by winning game two 7-5, having fallen 7-2 in game one at the UWA Softball Complex on Sunday.
Lee wins the series after taking game one on Saturday, to improve to 12-9 overall and 4-7 in the GSC. UWA moves to 9-11and 3-8.
Scarlett Wright led the Tigers at the plate with a two-run home run in each game. Wright's first homer, in the bottom of the third inning, accounted for the only runs by the Tigers in the first game and was one of the team's four hits. Lee finished the game with 12 hits, led by Lexie Dean and Kaylie Drew with three each.
Wright's second two-run slugger came in the bottom of the first inning of game two and tied the score at 2-2. After Lee took its final lead of the day at 3-2 in the top of the second, UWA pieced together three runs in the bottom of the inning on a fielder's choice, an error and a walk with the bases loaded by Lee.
Two more runs by the Tigers in the third and fourth innings secured the victory, despite a solo home run by Emily Dognan in the top of the third and an RBI double by Dominique Hannah in the top of the sixth.
"We didn't do anything in game one that hurt us, they just beat us," said UWA head coach
Will Atkinson.
"We had a game plan and after going into the seventh trailing by one it got a little more lopsided, but some days that's going to happen. In game two we executed the pitches we wanted to and finally began stringing hits together. I was proud of how our pitchers established the strike zone and allowed our defense to make plays."
Alli Hall (6-8) picked up the win in game two, overcoming a loss in game one. Hall combined to strikeout five through eight total innings, with four strikeouts in game one.
"What Alli did in the game one goes beyond what you'll see in the box score," Atkinson said. "She got better every inning and made big plays when the counted."
Giana Cavallaro entered both games with three strikeouts through two innings and no runs allowed in game one. She allowed one run through three innings of game two.
Ashley Stassin closed the first game, giving up four runs in the final inning.
Leigh Beatenbaugh (5-5) pitched the complete first game to take the win, allowing two runs. Hughes (6-4) gave up four earned runs to take the loss in game two.
West Alabama returns to action Tuesday to host Peach Belt Conference opponent Young Harris in a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the UWA Softball Complex.
