Tigers Extend Winning Streak to 18 With 14-2 Victory at Union

JACKSON, Tenn. – Ranked 16th in the nation, the West Alabama baseball team extended its winning streak to 18 games with a 14-2 Gulf South Conference victory over Union Sunday at Fesmire Field.

The Tigers, who haven't lost since March 7, are now 29-8 overall, 21-5 in GSC play. Union dipped to 7-30 and 5-22.

West Alabama rapped out 13 hits and took advantage of six Union errors on the way to the victory. Four UWA pitchers allowed just four Bulldog hits.

"We came to the ballpark and did what we needed to do to get a win," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "I am proud of the way we are coming to the ballpark and are mature enough to take care of business."

Tiger starter Gandy Stubblefield (5-2) went five innings in a game stopped after seven for the conference-mandated mercy rule. Stubblefield allowed just two singles while striking out seven and walking two. Union starter Skyler Harrison (2-7) took the loss.

"Gandy pitched very well, as all our starters have done over the past few weeks," Rundles said. West Alabama pitchers have allowed just 15 earned runs in the last 15 games.

Jack Cockrum had three hits and drove in two runs, including a run-scoring triple, to lead the UWA offensive attack. Cockrum was a home run away from hitting for the cycle. Tanner Rainey had two hits, including his 12th home run of the year. Daniel Bolte also chipped in two hits for the Tigers.

West Alabama jumped out to a 3-0 lead before putting the game away by scoring eight unearned runs in the fifth inning. The Tigers added three more runs in the sixth.

Union scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, including a solo home run by Davis Shoemaker, his first, in the bottom of the seventh.

West Alabama is scheduled to travel to William Carey for a non-conference game on Wednesday before hosting West Florida in a GSC series Saturday and Sunday at Tartt Field.
