UWA Baseball Extends Win Streak to 19 Beating UWF 8-5

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama got seven of its 12 hits from the bottom three spots in the batting order on the way to an 8-5 Gulf South Conference baseball victory over West Florida Sunday at Tartt Field.

The victory was the 19th straight for the 12th-ranked Tigers, who improved to 30-8 overall and 22-5 in GSC play. West Florida dropped to 25-15 and 18-10. The Tigers and the Argonauts complete the series with a doubleheader Monday starting at 1 p.m.

"The key to our success, like it has been a number of times this year, was the lower half of the batting order getting hits and driving in runs," UWA head coach Gary rundles said. "Those guys have been able to roll the order over so many times this season."

Daniel Bolte, who hits in the eight spot, had three hits and drove in a run. Tanner Rainey, who bats seventh, and Jake Bush in the nine hole, each had two hits and drove in a run. All three, along with Luigi Mendez, had doubles for the Tigers.

Mitch Holgate had two hits, including his sixth home run of the year, a two-run blast over the left field wall in the fifth inning. Holgate and Rainey also scored two runs apiece.

"You are always pleased with a win, but we didn't play our best," Rundles said. "I thought for the first time in a long time we played tense. Every game from here on out has a lot riding on it, so we need to relax and play the way we are capable.

"We didn't play well defensively and I thought our pitching was off," Rundles said. "The key to the game was when Jorge Cruz got out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the fourth by striking out the side."

Cruz (9-2) worked six innings for the win, striking out eight and not walking a batter. With UWF leading 1-0, he made mental errors on back-to-back UWF bunts to load the bases in the fourth before striking out Sean Plunkett, Michael Tomlinson and Jimmy Redovian to end the threat.

"He got himself into it and then pitched out of it," Rundles said. "That's the sign of a great pitcher."

Brandon Pennington and Brock Ward didn't give up a run in one inning of work each to set up Rainey for his eighth save of the year. Rainey struck out two in the ninth. West Florida starter Brandon Nagem (6-2) absorbed the loss.

Ledarious Clark had a pair of triples, scored two runs and drive in one to pace a nine-hit UWF attack. Nic Strasser, and Alex Greene had two hits each for the Argonauts.
