UWA and UWF Split, Win Streak Ends at 20

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama won 3-2 in walk-off fashion in game one, but saw its winning streak end at 20 games as West Florida defeated the Tigers, 4-0, to split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader at Tartt Field Monday.

Parker Madden singled in Daniel Bolte with the game-winner with no outs in the ninth inning to give UWA the 3-2 win in game one, but UWF starter Walker O'Connor threw a complete game shutout against the Tigers in game two.

"We won a GSC series against a very good baseball team," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "If we win one more this weekend we are conference regular season champions."

The 10th ranked Tigers are host to 5th-ranked Alabama-Huntsville in a season-ending three-game series Saturday and Sunday to determine who wins the regular season and hosts the GSC Tournament.

"You know that when you play as many games as we do you aren't going to win every game, but what we experienced was special," Rundles said. "You have to tip your hat to Walker O'Connor. He kept us off balance for the whole game."

Tanner Rainey (3-1) picked up the game one win in relief, striking out two in 1.2 innings. UWF reliever Reed Bright (3-3) took the loss. O'Conner (7-3) pitched seven innings for the win in game two, scattering five hits and striking out three. UWA starter Gandy Stubblefield (5-3) took the loss despite striking out eight and walking one in 6.1 innings.

"Fernando Gonzalez battled in game one and got some outs in critical situations," Rundles said. "The bottom part of our lineup gave us a boost again, but we need to put the top and bottom together."

Madden, Rainey and Jack Cockrum had three hits in the two games for West Alabama. Luigi Mendez hit his third home run of the year, a solo shot in game one.

Michael Tomlinson had three hits and drove in two runs for West Florida.

West Alabama steps outside of GSC play Tuesday and Wednesday, playing Montevallo in single games on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Tigers host the Falcons Tuesday at 5 p.m. and the two teams play at Montevallo Wednesday at 6 p.m.
