10th Ranked Tigers Use Long Ball to Topple Montevallo, 8-3

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama got home runs from Tanner Rainey, Jack Cockrum and Mitch Holgate on the way to an 8-3 college baseball victory over Montevallo Tuesday at Tartt Field.

The victory improves West Alabama to 32-9, while Montevallo fell to 20-23. The 10th ranked Tigers and the Falcons play again Wednesday in Montevallo with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.

After Montevallo scored a run in the top of the first, Cockrum launched his second homer of the year over the right field wall to even the score in the bottom half of the inning. The Tigers would go ahead for good on a solo shot by Holgate, his sixth of the year, in the third inning.

Daniel Bolte tripled in two runs to give UWA a 4-1 lead after four innings before the Tigers putt the game away with four runs in the eighth inning. The big blow in the eighth was a there-run homer from Rainey, his 13th of the year.

Eddie Kieffer, Holgate and Rainey also doubled for West Alabama. Holgate had three hits to pace a 16-hit UWA attack.

Montevallo pushed across two runs in the top of ninth when pinch hitter Alex Jones drove in Michael Simmons and Jacob Whiting, who had singled and walked, respectively. Steven Knudson and Whiting had two hits apiece for the Falcons.

West Alabama starter Josh Jones pitched 7.1 innings to earn the win, allowing a run while striking out eight and walking one. A trio of relievers finished the game for UWA. Falcons' starter Joey Hume (1-4) was tagged with the loss.

The game at Montevallo on Wednesday is the final non-conference outing for West Alabama this season. The Tigers are host to fifth-ranked Alabama Huntsville this weekend in a Gulf South Conference battle of top 10 teams for the GSC regular season title.

Whoever wins the series between the Tigers and Chargers will win the regular season and earn the right to host the conference tournament May 2-5.
