Mendez Grand Slam Propels 10th-Ranked West Alabama to 10-6 Win At Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – West Alabama hit three home runs, including a grand slam by Luigi Mendez, and four Tiger pitchers combined to strike out 11 as the Tigers defeated Montevallo, 10-6, Wednesday at Kermit Johnson Field.

The victory improved 10th-ranked West Alabama, which has won 22 of its last 23 games, to 33-9. Montevallo dropped to 20-24.

Brandon Pennington (4-1) worked 3.2 innings of relief to earn the win. Pennington struck out six while allowing just one hit. Montevallo starter Drew Mullinax (2-3) was charged with the loss.

Montevallo took advantage of a double from Vinny Rodriguez, along with a Tiger error and a wild pitch, to plate two unearned runs in the top of the first. The double extended Rodriguez' hitting streak to 26 games.

West Alabama got on the board in the top of the fourth inning when Parker Madden blasted a solo home run to dead center field, his fourth homer of the year. Prior to Madden's blast, Falcon left-hander Drew Mullinax had sat down the first nine batters he faced.

Madden drove in another run with a sacrifice fly to tie the score at 2-2 in the fourth inning, but the Falcons scored a run without the aid of a hit in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead.

Mendez belted his grand slam with nobody out in the top of sixth off Mullinax to give West Alabama a 6-3 lead. The blast was Mendez' fourth of the year. UWA used a pair of Falcon errors to tack on another sixth-inning run and stretch the lead to 7-3.

Mitch Holgate hit his eighth home run of the year to lead off the seventh to stretch the Tiger lead to 8-3.  It was Holgate's second homer against the Falcons in as many nights. UWA beat Montevallo 8-3 on Tuesday night in Livingston.

West Alabama closed out its scoring by pushing across two runs in the top of the ninth. Tanner Rainey drove one in with a single and the other scored on a Montevallo throwing error, the fifth Falcon error of the game.

The Falcons scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth, with the big blow being a two-run double by Michael Simmons.

Adam Chamblee had two of West Alabama's seven hits. Rodriguez had three hits to lead Montevallo and Steven Knudson chipped in two more.

West Alabama closes its regular season against No. 5 Alabama Huntsville with a three-game Gulf South Conference series at Tart Field. The winner of the series will win the GSC regular season title and the host spot for the conference tournament May 2-5.

Saturday's doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. with a single game to follow Sunday at 1 p.m.
