UWA Wins GSC Regular Season Title With Sweep of UAH

LIVINGSTON, Ala.Jack Cockrum had a pair of grand slams and Mitch Holgate had two homers as 10th ranked West Alabama claimed the Gulf South Conference regular season title with a doubleheader sweep over fifth-ranked Alabama Huntsville Sunday at Tartt Field. UWA won the first game, 7-2, and the second game, 12-3.

West Alabama clinched the top seed in the GSC Tournament. The Tigers are 35-9 overall and 25-6 in GSC play. UAH dropped to 35-8-1 and 21-8-1.

The GSC Tournament will take place at Tartt Field Saturday through Tuesday with three games starting at noon on the first two days. Six teams comprise the field.

"I am at a loss for words," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "I am so proud of these guys, the way we kept fighting back all year and the leadership shown by those eight seniors we honored before game one today.

"We have accomplished our first goal and now we have to work on the bigger goals," Rundles said. "We also have to get ready to play tomorrow against a very good UAH team. At this time of year every game counts towards something, so we can't just go through the motions."

With the scored tied at 2-2 in the opener, Cockrum put the game away for the Tigers with his first grand slam, driving in four in a five-run eighth inning for West Alabama. Cockrum's second grand slam, his fourth homer of the year, in the fifth inning of game two put the game away. The Tiger catcher drove in nine runs in the doubleheader.

Not to be outdone, UWA third baseman Mitch Holgate went 6-for-8 in the twinbill with two homers, two triples and five RBI. Holgate's two blasts give him 10 for the year. Eddie Kieffer also homered for the Tigers in game two, his third of the year.

"I guess it's an understatement to say what a day Jack Cockrum and Mitch Holgate had," Rundles said. "They sparked us when we needed a spark, but this while team keeps on fighting and taking advantage of opportunities when they present themselves."

Brandon Pennington (5-1) picked up the pitching win in the first game in relief of starter Jorge Cruz. Fernando Gonzalez (9-1) went the distance for the Tigers to win the second game, striking out eight and walking three. Luke Mould (4-2) and Michael Wright (5-1) absorbed the Charger losses.

"Jorge Cruz threw with a lot of heart and Penny came in and does what Penny does," Rundles said. "Fernando battled and battled against what is probably the best offensive team we have faced all year."

Chandler Brock had seven hits in the doubleheader for UAH, including going 4-for-4 in the nightcap. AJ Walden went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the first game for the Chargers.

The Tigers and Chargers close the series with a single game at 1 p.m. Monday.
