UWA Baseball Completes Sweep of UAH With 11-1 Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama, ranked No. 6 nationally, completed a three-game Gulf South Conference sweep of Alabama Huntsville by defeating the Chargers, 11-1, Monday at Tartt Field.

The sweep makes the Tigers 36-9 overall heading into this weekend's GSC Tournament, which UWA will host. The Tigers complete GSC play with a 26-6 mark. UAH, who dropped from No. 5 nationally to 14th after getting swept is 35-9-1 and 21-9-1.

Mitch Holgate and Tanner Rainey both had three hits, with Rainey driving in three runs, to lead a 16-hit offensive attack by West Alabama. Jack Cockrum and Jake Bush drove in two runs each as the Tigers put the Chargers away via the GSC mercy rule. Cockrum's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh drove in Bush to plate the final run.

Tiger starter Gandy Stubblefield (6-3) went seven innings for the complete-game victory. The transfer from Texas A&M scattered four hits while striking out nine and walking just one. UAH starter Tyler Howell (4-4) was tagged with the loss.

The Chargers scored first, as they did on all three games of the series, pushing across a single run in the top of the first inning. West Alabama tied the game at 1-1 with his 11th home run of the year, a solo shot to left in the third inning.

From then on it was all Tigers. UWA scored two runs in the fourth, four in the fifth, one in the sixth and three more in the seventh before the game ended with one out when Cockrum chased Bush, who had tripled in two runs.

Holgate finished off a stellar week that saw West Alabama go 5-0. The junior from Windsor, Ontario, Canada was 13-of-21 (.619) with five home runs, two triples, a double and two stolen bases.

Brandon Lawing had two of UAH's four hits. The Chargers lone run scored on a wild pitch.

West Alabama will play Delta State in the first round of the GSC Tournament Saturday at 3:30 p.m. UAH will meet Valdosta State in the first game of the day, while West Georgia and West Florida will play the nightcap on day one of the conference gathering at Tartt Field.

Day passes for the GSC Tournament are $8 for adults, $5 for students of GSC school with a valid ID, $5 for fans ages 6-to-12. Children under 5-years-old are admitted free. A tournament pass is available for $20.
